Sharing Resources

And we made it to Thanksgiving week! It’s one of my favorite weeks of the entire year. Eating, giving thanks, time for just being, time to sleep in, the week has it all.

I’ve been busy lately, writing and reading for my memoir class at the University of Washington, writing stories for ParentMap, fact-checking magazine articles, and hanging with that family of mine as the weather turns cold and the heat kicks on more and more often. But the deadlines are winding down, so I have time to share resources this morning.

Here’s what I love lately, the articles and websites and books I have found to be helpful, inspiring, and true:

Writing Is My Drink, by Theo Nestor, a memoir about her journey to becoming a writer. At the end of each chapter, there is a good chunk of super awesome writing prompts. Full disclosure: she teaches the writing class I am taking at the UW, and she is the best writing teacher. One more full disclosure: reading this memoir made me pick up her first memoir again, called How to Sleep Alone in a King-Size Bed. I really didn’t think I would read all of it again, since this was my third time through the book. I read it all again, marveling at how her memoirs read like the best novels, but better because I adore memoirs.

Aiden Donnelly Rowley’s blog, which I found via Twitter (find me at @NSchatzAlton). Read this post.

Hand Wash Cold: Care Instructions for an Ordinary Life by Karen Maezen Miller. Yes, this is a Buddhist memoir. My oldest laughed as she read the back cover copy out loud: “a contemporary woman reveals the happiness at the bottom of the laundry basket, the love in the kitchen sink, and the peace possible in one’s own backyard.” Laugh all you want, my girl, but I need to find some happiness in that endless laundry pile that you are almost single-handedly creating! Find her blog here.

I also found this Special Needs Resources website. I haven’t had time to fully surf this site, but I can tell it will be worthy of my time.

That’s all for now. I’ll be back soon with a book review. Until then, enjoy your own Thanksgiving week, and thank you for stopping by!
